Lesson 2: Multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100, and 1,000Dividing decimals by 10, 100, and 1000
Practice dividing decimals by 10, 100, and 1000.
Part 1: Dividing decimals by 10
Key idea: Dividing by moves every digit one place to the right.
Let's try a few more dividing by :
And one multiplying by (for review):
Part 2: Dividing decimals by 100
Key idea: Dividing by moves every digit two places to the right.
Let's try a few more dividing by :
And one multiplying by (for review):
Part 3: Dividing decimals by 1000
Key idea: Dividing by moves every digit three places to the right.
Let's try a few more dividing by :
And one multiplying by (for review):
Part 4: Let's look at the pattern.
Part 5: Challenge time!
Use the pattern above to answer the following questions.
And a multiplication challenge:

- gets hard once it gets to 100(29 votes)
- wanna tip? Just remember when dividing with decimals just slide decimal to the right acoordingto how many zeros in the number(25 votes)
- gets hard on 100,000 and 1m(16 votes)
- think about like this: if you want to divide shift the decimal point to the left based on the numbers of zeros. for example if you want to divide 4.25 ÷ 10 you will shift the decimal point one time to the left (because there is one zero in the ten). if you want to divide 4.35 ÷ 100 you will shift the decimal point two times to the left because there is two zeros in the 100.(18 votes)
- i always forget where to move the point while dividing and multiplying(11 votes)
- When multiplying by a power of 10 (such as 10, 100, 1000, etc), move the decimal point the same number of places to the right as there are zeros in the power of 10.
When dividing by a power of 10, move the decimal point the same number of places to the left as there are zeros in the power of 10.

- you move right when dividing and left when multipling?(11 votes)
- no, left when dividing, and right when multiplying(6 votes)
- i thought it was neat and a good website for learners(13 votes)
- Couldn't you put it in a more Engage(NY)ing way as the name suggests?(11 votes)
- Hi you are smart(3 votes)
- Can we get hints, and then when we are really stuck, we can get the answer.(8 votes)
- That sounds like a good way.Plus that would make ours lives easier(7 votes)
- am I the only one who is doing this?(5 votes)
- Nah bro you good. you good(1 vote)
- It’s confusing because they’re referring to digits moving rather than the dot/point, so everything is reversed.(3 votes)
- yeah that is right(4 votes)
